Why Errol Flynn ?
News
Captain's log
I have not known Errol for very long - - i first heard about him when a band i really like called the Levellers wrote a song - i think the main contributor was the lead singer who expressed a dream that he would love to go back to the good old days in Hollywood and socialise he says "Hepburn says 'i love you' and Flynn says 'make mine a double jack'" and knowing what i do of this man i got intrigued and read Errol's Autobiography "My Wicked, Wicked Ways". I read the whole book in a day and from then on since i have been hooked and bigtime. I then read Earl Conrad's "Errol Flynn: A Memoir..." i loved this book; it was written with so much compassion and empathy and it gives the serious reader so much insight into the workings of the mind of this one-off amazing man.
I then went on to read Beam Ends and Showdown: Literary works from Errol himself. Brilliant and highly recommended reading *i find it hard to remember in which order i read things! but...* I think the next thing i read about Errol was "Errol Flynn in Northampton" by Gerry Connelly this also comes highly recommended...at this point i had not even watched a film!!! i have learnt about many things since i have known Errol Flynn.
I found a quote by Beverly Aadland in a local paper and she says: "He loved to teach me. He would send me off to the bookstore with a list of things to read." Sums it up for me totally...but that's another webpage!...
In short i have become interested in other countries, bought travel books, even tried to learn a bit of foreign linga! i have listened to music and looked at paintings and read pieces that i have found brilliant and would not have found them if not for Errol. I have even been able to get my head around relations with my parents by reading what he said about his.
i think that Errol looked very at home on a sailing ship.
Also i would like to add that this man has made a massive impact on my life - and i will go so far to say that he has been a lifesaver to me. i will be adding to this webpage as and when i can...
*please read*
there are people on this planet who will stoop to such levels as to slag off someone; to defame their character purely to boost their own career and bank balance.
also just as disappointing there are companies that agree to publish these certain individuals' fantasy works as "biographies" - at least if you must have it published then have the decencey to file it under "fiction"!!!
if any of you are curious as to what's in the books go and read it from the library PLEASE don't buy the book it will only line their scummy pockets a bit more.
a not so fine example is the recent works of David Bret.
An excellent review of this can be read here.
the other joker i have my eye on is Charles Higham. his book entitled "the untold story" is basically along the same fantastical lines - it was published in 1980. as far as i know many of the copies of this book have been withdrawn due to complaints to the publishers.
as soon as i can i will post contact details etc so you can also voice your views your selves.
I would also be interested to hear: was there any lawsuit taken out on Higham and was it successful? thanks :)
*watch out Bret and Higham.....Errol may not be here anymore but we are and we won't let you get away with it!!!!
Just a thought but, if anyone reading this owns a copy of either of these books and wants to do a public cremation then go ahead. I have toyed with the idea of buying 2nd hand copies of "the untold story" cheaply from a bkdealer and just burning them - more actual copies out of circulation the better! *Although! just heard that some copies have photos in so buy it for shit-cheap, take out the photos, keep them and burn the rest!!!
Would appreciate what ppl have to say on this! Send me a mail of what you think. Put "Charles Higham Burns" in the subject field.
As for David Bret, well...enough bad reviews his book gets and i don't think the publishers will bother with it again. It will lose them too much money in the long run. Amazon.co.uk don't supply this anymore.
